SOCIAL STUDIES

The United States is on the continent of North America. A continent is a large body of land.
There are 50 states. United means "together". The name of this country, The United State, means 50 states together. Forty-eight states are in the part of the country that lies between Canada and Mexico. Each state touches at least one other state.

REGIONS OF THE UNITED STATES
The United States is a very large country. In fact, it's the fourth-largest country in the world. This nation stretches 2,807 miles from the East Coast to the West Coast. And then there are Alaska and Hawaii, too! How ca you study something so big?
One way to study this big nation is to divide it into areas called regions. The United States can be divided into six different regions:
  • NORTHEAST REGION
  • SOUTHEAST REGION
  • NORTH CENTRAL REGION
  • ROCKY MOUNTAIN REGION
  • SOUTHWEST REGION
  • PACIFIC REGION
Each region has something special about it. Some regions have lots of mountains, and some are very flat. Some regions get lots of rain, and some are very dry. Some regions are warm most of the year. Some regions get very cold in winter.

ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS FOR NEXT CLASS (please write the answers in your notebook)
1. Where is the United States?
2. How many states are there in the United States?
3. What are the names of the regions in the United States?
4. What do you think is the thing that makes your region special? Why?
